ANALYSIS OF THE SPOTTED HORSES
The main character, the protagonist Flem Nott, is a man of low moral character. He manipulates people for his personal gain. A man who has no limit for making a dollar. His name is Flem, which is part of the phrase “flem-flam” that means to con someone out of something valuable. He takes the risk of the current of the town’s stone market to get himself in a position to take a woman. It did not bother him that she was having another man’s baby. Flem is somewhat admired by the townspeople, even though he constantly cheats them. He is able to get away with his vindictiveness because the town’s people are afraid of him. The man has a heart of stone. He was willing to watch a man beat his wife over a hand. His only concern is for himself. His motivation seems to be for money and power. The whole town revolves around his actions. Flem is definitely not a man of principles. The narrator seems to be impressed with Flem’s ability to manipulate and deceive.
